Today, 10th of July, 2019 marks exactly 20 years after the July 1999 cultists violent attack at the Obafemi Awolowo University. 10th of July becomes a remarkable day in the history of the institution since the 1999 event. THE FULL STORY Around 4:30 A.M on Saturday, 10th of July, 1999, there was a violent attack at the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, Osun State. Reports say the attack was perpetrated by 40 masked members of the Black Axe Confraternity who wore black trousers, black T-shirts and face masks. Five OAU students, including one George Iwilade (Afrika), the Secretary-General of the Students’ Union, were killed with shotguns and hatchets while eleven others were injured. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has resolved to reconfirm biometrics of all candidates that sat for its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The board made this known in its Vol. 1, No 27 weekly Bulletin of the Office of the Registrar, made available to the Newsmen on Sunday in Abuja. The board said that the development was to detect impersonators, fish them out and prosecute them along their sponsors. It also vowed to publish names of imposters in order to serve as a deterrent to others as well as stem the antics of professional examination takers.
